Objectives of the Course The aim of the course is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge for the conservation of historic architectural buildings located in urban conservation areas and their transmission to the present and future, as well as their renovation and redesign in line with new functions. Within this scope, the development of solution approaches that will enable historic environments to integrate with contemporary economic and social life in the context of the conservation and reuse of architectural cultural heritage is targeted.
In addition, the course aims to develop the ability to create contemporary designs that meet the needs of society on vacant plots resulting from demolished buildings in historic environments, in previously undeveloped areas, and through new additions to the existing building environment. In this regard, the examination of local architectural identity and original spatial configurations, as well as the development of infill designs compatible with plot coverage ratios, building masses, and architectural character, are targeted.
In line with the building typologies identified through site analyses, the course aims to address solid-to-void ratios on façades, color and material selections, and roof forms in harmony with local architectural characteristics, and to develop high-quality and sustainable design solutions that ensure the integration of new designs with the historic environment.
Course Content Within the scope of the course, the principles and international conservation decisions that need to be taken into consideration when designing new additions and buildings in dense historic environments where conservation efforts are carried out are examined. In line with the analysis of original spatial configurations, the design of contemporary additions and buildings compatible with historic environments, as well as the implementation of integration and completion works, are addressed. The architectural identities of settlements and different approaches to new building design in historic environments are discussed. Within this scope, examples of contemporary architectural approaches selected from Türkiye and abroad are introduced, examined, and evaluated. The documentation of the current conditions of historic environments and buildings requiring conservation, the investigation of their historical backgrounds, and their analysis within spatial, functional, demographic, art historical, and architectural historical contexts are among the main topics of the course. In addition, the investigation of the conditions of buildings during the periods in which they were constructed and the development of decisions regarding restoration interventions are addressed.
Course Methods and Techniques Within the scope of the presentation topics, bibliographic sources, legal status, archival documents from relevant institutions, maps, engravings, photographs, and, if available, restoration projects related to the selected building or historic environment are researched and examined. Based on the data obtained, the relationship between the original characteristics of the historic environment and contemporary architectural approaches is evaluated, and a synthesis is developed that includes design proposals for the integration of contemporary additional volumes and buildings into the historic environment.
Within the scope of the course, student presentations and critiques on selected presentation topics are conducted as midterm assessment activities. This activity consists of one presentation and critique process and contributes 40% to the overall grade. The end-of-semester assessment consists of the final submission of presentation boards and the submission of an abstract text, is evaluated as one final submission, and contributes 60% to the overall grade. The overall course grade is calculated based on 40% of the midterm studies and 60% of the end-of-semester assignment submission.
