organization, social institutions, and social change.
Throughout the semester, by surveying basic concepts, important theories, research
methods as well as empirical studies, students acquire not only knowledge per se
but also what C. Wright Mills calls the "sociological imagination": the ability to
think beyond our personal lives and to connect the experiences of individuals with
large social structures. This interaction between social structures including culture,
religion, race, ethnicity, gender, class and human actions lies at the heart of
sociology.

SOC103 Hasan Kalyoncu University Dr. Burçin Uluğ Eryılmaz2

This course is designed into four parts. The first part explores basic concepts,
modern theoretical approaches, research process and methods of sociology. The
second part is devoted to the interaction between the individual and society where
relationship between culture and society, socialization, theories of groups,
networks, and organizations as well as concepts of crime and deviance are
addressed. The third part covers structures of power, more particularly, concepts
and theories pertaining to stratification, global and gender inequality, race,
ethnicity, and racism. The fourth part delves into exploration of social institutions
such as concepts and theories related to work and economic life, families,
education, and religion.
Throughout lectures, critical-thinking questions and in-class discussion activities
help students develop more well-informed ideas about core issues and state-of-the-
art in sociology; develop their critical thinking skills and apply what they have
learned.
