Objectives of the Course
The objective of this course is to provide students with a solid foundation in the theoretical principles of sinusoidal voltage generation and rotating magnetic fields in AC machinery. The course covers the mathematical analysis, equivalent circuit parameter estimation, operation, and control techniques of both polyphase induction machines and three-phase synchronous machines (cylindrical and salient-pole). Additionally, it aims to impart deep knowledge and practical insight into the operation, modeling, and application of single-phase induction motors and fractional horsepower/specialty motors.

Course Content
This course begins with the utilization of three-phase AC power in power systems, sinusoidal voltage generation methods, MMF waveforms of concentrated and distributed windings, rotating magnetic fields, and flux density distributions in uniform and non-uniform air gaps. The second part covers the structural characteristics of polyphase induction machines, determination of equivalent circuit parameters via no-load and blocked-rotor tests, steady-state performance analysis (current, torque, power flow, efficiency), and torque-speed characteristics. The third section addresses cylindrical and salient-pole synchronous machines, $d$-$q$ axis theory, phasor diagrams, power-angle characteristics, V-curves, synchronization, and stability analysis using the Equal-Area Criterion. The final section thoroughly covers the structural features of single-phase induction motors and other fractional horsepower/specialty motors.
