Objectives of the Course The aim of this course is to teach students who will work in the civil aviation sector about meteorological phenomena that directly affect flight safety, weather observation and forecasting products, aviation meteorology concepts, and how this information is utilized in operational processes. Students acquire the fundamental competencies to make accurate assessments regarding flight planning, operations management, and safety decisions by interpreting meteorological data.
Course Content The course covers the definition and scope of meteorology and its relationship with civil aviation. It examines the structure, layers, and fundamental characteristics of the atmosphere, while evaluating meteorological phenomena—such as air temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, cloud systems, precipitation types, fog, turbulence, icing, and thunderstorms—from an aviation perspective. Emphasis is placed on critical weather phenomena that directly affect flight safety and their implications for operational processes. Students learn to read and interpret aviation meteorological reports such as METAR, SPECI, TAF, SIGMET, and AIRMET. Basic-level analysis of weather charts, satellite imagery, and radar data is conducted, and the impact of wind components on runway selection and aircraft performance calculations is examined.
